As Fast as Lightning
How to Play: I'm going to tell a story about a famous person or thing in history without saying who or what it is and you need to figure out I'm talking about Let's begin.
The man closed his eyes and pictured winning his race. He imagined flying across the finish line when his opponents were a gazillion miles behind him. He visualized speeding across the finish line before performing his signature move. In his imagination the crowd roared in amazement by his success. For the fifth time that morning the giant of a man thought about the absolute perfect ending to the race. He never thought about the beginning of a race but always envisioned the perfect finishing for it. The man’s thoughts wandered to his childhood.
The boy was been born in 1986. At a very young age he started playing cricket. He loved the game and would play with the kids in his neighborhood all the time.
When the young boy was been 12 years old his cricket coach noticed his lightning speed and suggested that the boy try track and field. The boy attempted the 200 meter sprint. Going half way around the track and sprinting the entire way, the boy beat his elders in the local school meets.
The young boy’s talent caught the eyes of many people. 1 of whom was a strict 65 year old man named Pablo who happened to be a retired silver medalist for the Olympics. Pablo noticed the young boy's pure talent and made the decision to start mentoring him at William Knibb Memorial High School.
Every day the young boy looked forward to track practice. Flying down the track and around the corners, it was the highlight of his day.
Pablo suggested that the boy start running the 100 meter dash and the boy excelled in it.
In spring 2003 the boy was now a young man at 16 years old. He’d started running the 400 meter dash. That spring at a track meet he beat the William Knibb Memorial High School record in the 200 meter dash. His time was 20.25. This means that he was running at a speed of 22 mph. The boy’s confidence soared after that and later that spring he beat the highschool record for the 400 as well, with a time of 45.35. He was running 19 mph.
He then moved away from the highschool in order to train with a man named Glen Mills, who became his long term coach.
In 2004 the man qualified for the Athens Olympics in the 200. He was looking forward to the event but the man pulled a hamstring before the race.
Despite the injury the man ran his race, though was eliminated in the first round.
For the next few years the young man continued to practice. In late May of 2008 when went to the Czech Republic for the Golden Spike meet and beat the world record for the 100 meter dash. He ran the race in 9.72 seconds, shattering the last record which was 9.76 seconds, while this may not seem like a long time in the world of sprinting it is. Later that year, in the Beijing Olympics he qualified for the 200 again and also the 100.
The day before he ran in the final of the 100 meter dash the man’s dinner consisted of a huge amount of chicken nuggets. While most Olympic athletes would consume pasta, potatoes, fruits and veggies, and some meat that wasn’t chicken nuggets. The man decided to do it anyway.
On the day of the race the man took off down the track and broke his own world record with a time of 9.69 seconds, taking home the gold medal. The most shocking part of his feat was the fact that through the entire race, the man’s shoe was untied.
Later that Olympics the man broke Michael Johnson’s record of 19.32 by running the 200 in 19.30. After winning the gold medal there too the man performed his signature move the Lightning Bolt. Yes, Usain Bolt ran his record breaking 100 with an untied shoe after a meal of chicken nuggets. Hopefully after hearing this story my mom will get me McDonalds every day.
