My new Resume: Marathon runner, Sub six mile runner, Retired Pole Vaulter, Missionary.
The grocery store Publix hires at fourteen. I'm turning fourteen in July. There's a Publix close to my house that I could bike to. If you haven't connected the dots to see where I'm going with this, then I'm genuinely concerned for your mental state. I'm stoked that I'll be able to get a job and have money, but if I'm going to secure the job spot, then I'll need a resume.
1: Marathon Runner.
My oldest brother, Sawyer, got dragged into a marathon when he was fourteen. Not an official marathon. Just running and tracking their mileage until they got to the required 26.2 miles. (More like 26 miles, but who's counting?) Their time was 4:56.
A few months ago I started talking to a couple of friends about running a marathon and beating Sawyer's time while being younger than he was.
I tried to go to sleep early the night before the marathon, but I was too worried and only got around an hour of sleep.
Finally, it was time to go. I got up, and my brother and I went to my friend's house, where we would start. The runners were me, my older brother Quaid, my friend Adam who also runs, and my friend John Paul from track. We ran through the Raising Canes drive thru and a lady gave us free throw away water bottles. Our final time was 4:52. Take that, Sawyer!
2: Sub Six Mile Runner.
In my last season of track, I quit running three quarters of the way through the season to pole vault. My PR mile during the season was 6:37. During Cross Country season, I ran a 6:31 for my first mile in a three-mile race, which I was really happy about. A couple of weeks ago we had a one-mile time trial for track, and I was determined to run a sub-six mile. The first lap around the track was somewhere in the 1:20s. Lap two, and I was in the high 2:50s. Lap three came, and I was too slow. My time was in the mid-4:30s. I finished my last lap and had run 5:59. Then on Saturday I went to a meet for middle schoolers and ran a 5:51 and got second place.
3: Retired Pole Vaulter
Like I'd said before, last year I quit running to try pole vault. I had a great time and even competed in JV Championships. But during the summer, I wasted a hundred dollars on a weeklong pole vault camp in which I only got to actually pole vault two of the days. Then I did wrestling, which was horrible, but the two-a-day practices made me a lot tougher. When track season came around, I was fresh off of wrestling and ready for pole vault to be hard in the same way that wrestling was. But when I got there, pole vault was way easier than I was expecting it to be, so I quit, and now I'm running middle distance.
4: Missionary
Every two years, my church puts together a camp called For the Strength of Youth (FSY) where a huge number of boys and girls from age fourteen to eighteen come to a college campus for five days to listen to awesome talks. This year I'm finally old enough to go, and I've been looking forward to it for a super long time. Because it's five days long, I'll be sleeping at the campus. I've been sort of worried about who my roommate would be because I've heard a lot of stories from friends who had some weird roommates. I'd asked some of the kids from my church, but they'd already talked to each other about roommates, so my odds of being with a weirdo were improving by the minute. But then I had a great idea. By mile fifteen of my marathon, John Paul and I were slowing down a little bit, and I decided to ask him if he wanted to go to FSY. A few months later, and I'm helping him sign up. My family's foreign exchange student from last year is also flying in from Spain to come to FSY, so it's going to be awesome!
